Doss Day

Saturday, August 22, 2026 (12:00 PM - 7:00 PM) (CDT)

Description

Doss Day takes place THIS SATURDAY, August 22, from Noon–7:00 PM at the historic Sam Doss House in Desloge. This month marks 100 years since the death of Samuel Doss, a local lawman who served as Constable of Randolph Township, an area that included present-day Desloge. During the height of Prohibition, Doss became known for cracking down on moonshining and bootlegging throughout the area. According to accounts surrounding his death, just days before his assassination, Doss traveled to St. Louis seeking assistance from federal authorities in his fight against the illegal liquor trade. On August 16, 1926, that fight came to his own doorstep when Doss was assassinated inside his Desloge home. But Doss Day isn’t simply about remembering a murder that happened 100 years ago. The event has two larger goals: GOAL #1 — BRING THE 1920s BACK TO LIFE Throughout the afternoon, several individuals dressed in period clothing will help tell the story of life in the Leadbelt 100 years ago. You’ll be able to learn about Prohibition, moonshining and bootlegging, 1920s law enforcement, historic automobiles and more. Kids can also take part in activities and work toward earning their own Junior Deputy Badge! GOAL #2 — REMEMBER THOSE WHO SERVED From 3:00–4:00 PM, we will hold a special memorial service honoring law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, or because of their service, since the founding of St. Francois County. The National Anthem will be sung by Chelley Odle, followed by the memorial program. And the history doesn’t stop there! Four Towns Brewing Company will be presenting a special Prohibition exhibit from Noon–4:00 PM, and Darren Thomas will perform live classic country music from 4:00–6:00 PM. There will also be barbecue, refreshments, and several automobiles from 1922–1929 on display. And we want YOU to become part of the living history too… Show up in your best 1920s outfit! Come spend the afternoon with us as we step back 100 years and remember the people, stories, and history of the Leadbelt. πŸ“ Sam Doss House — Desloge, Missouri πŸ“… Saturday, August 22, 2026 πŸ•› Noon–7:00 PM
