Parents as Teacher Educator(Part Time)

Reports to: Parents As Teacher Supervisor and Director of Elementary Education

Summary of Position:
Instructs parents of infants and pre-school children in developmental information.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Elementary Education, Vocational Home Economics or Family and Consumer Sciences, or Occupational Child Care Services and demonstrated ability to work with young children and their parents; or
  • Associates Degree or two year certificate program in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or Nursing and demonstrated ability in working with young children and their parents; or
  • 60 college hours and two years of successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents; or
  • Five years of successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents
Skills and Training Required:
  • Valid Missouri driver's license with appropriate vehicle insurance as primary insured
  • Ability to acquire certification as a parent educator, and maintain that certification (Training is required and provided, upon hire)
  • Flexible Schedule is available
  • A minimum of 1-2 evenings a week required
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
  • Maintains confidentiality of information gained through the performance and location of the position.
  • Recruits parents of infants and pre-school children and advertises screening opportunities.
  • Travels to homes and provides in-home training to parents.
  • Provides timely information on child's development and parent-child activities.
  • Observes and plays with child and confers with child's parents and other professionals periodically to obtain information relating to child's mental and physical development.
  • Evaluates child's responses to determine levels of child's physical and mental development.
  • Determines parent's ability to comprehend information and observe his/her own child.
  • Develops individualized lessons covering self-help, motor, social, cognitive, and language skills development for parents to implement in home.
  • Instructs parents individually or in groups in behavior modification, physical development, language development, and conceptual learning exercises and activities.
  • Organizes groups of parents in similar situations to provide social and emotional support for parents and to share common concerns, frustrations, and success in the rearing of their children.
  • Consults and coordinates plans with other professionals.
  • Develops learning center for parents and children.
  • Increases parent confidence in child-rearing activities.
  • Provides screening for children from birth to kindergarten age to identify possible delays, physical problems, or advanced abilities.
  • Refers children with developmental problems to appropriate agencies.
