City of Farmington Public Works Department Prepares for Winter Storm

City of Farmington Public Works Department Prepares for Winter Storm

Farmington, Missouri (January 23, 2026) – The National Weather Service has

issued a winter storm warning for St. Francois County, Missouri, beginning

Friday, January 23, 2026, at midnight. The warning will remain in effect

through 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

Heavy snow is expected, with total accumulations between 5 and 10 inches,

with locally higher amounts possible.

Public Works crews, including the Street, Water, and Electric Departments,

are preparing for the potential winter weather.

STREET DEPARTMENT

The National Weather Service warns that rapid accumulation of snow will

make travel extremely difficult, if not impossible, during the storm.

Citizens who live in Farmington on city streets are asked to park their vehicles

off the street, if possible, to allow for safer and more efficient plowing. The City

of Farmington maintains more than one hundred miles of streets within city

limits, so plowing can take time. Plowing generally begins once snow

accumulates to one inch, with primary roads being plowed first.

Even after plowing, roadways may remain partially covered until

temperatures rise and sunshine melts the remaining snow or ice. Motorists

are encouraged to use caution, as plowed roads can remain slick.

When plowing, a row of snow often builds up along the edge of the roadway

and may unintentionally block driveways. This is an unavoidable result of

snow removal operations, and residents may need to shovel their driveways

after a heavy snowfall to regain access.

WATER DEPARTMENT

The Farmington Water Department reminds homeowners to take steps to

prevent frozen pipes during the forecasted below-freezing temperatures,

including:

• Leaving a small stream of water running when temperatures remain

below freezing for extended periods

• Ensuring manufactured home skirting is secure

• Ensuring homes are properly insulated

• Removing garden hoses from outside faucets

• Knowing how to shut off the home’s water supply

• Contacting a licensed plumber if pipes freeze

Taking these precautions can help prevent significant damage and costly

repairs.

If you experience frozen pipes, please contact a licensed plumber as soon as

possible. If you experience a water line break, notify the Development Services

Department at 573-756-0608 Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30

p.m., or after hours at 573-431-3131.

ELECTRIC DEPARTMENT

In the event of a power outage, Farmington City Light and Water customers

should report outages to the 24-hour notification line at 833-990-3370.

Residents may call or text this number and may receive updates via text, if

available. Customers may also download the Farmington MO Citizen Services

app to report outages directly. Updates will also be posted on the Farmington

Missouri Public Works Facebook page when available.

If you lose power and have in-home medical equipment that requires electric

service, you may visit the Farmington Police Department or Fire Department

24/7 or contact central dispatch at 573-431-3131 for assistance.

Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural

gas or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace

or any partially enclosed area. Keep these devices outdoors, away from doors,

windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors. If you

need help paying your utility bill, you may qualify for energy assistance

through East Missouri Action Agency. To apply, call (573) 431-5191 or go to

eastmoaa.org.

The City of Farmington Public Works Department will have crews working

throughout the weekend to respond to outages, snow accumulations, and

other weather-related emergencies. For more information, please contact the

Development Services Department at 573-756-0608 or visit our website at
