Lead Local Visits Missouri State Capitol
The Farmington Regional Chamber Lead Local group, a new community leadership development program designed to educate young and emerging leaders, visited Jefferson City this week to gain insight into state government and the legislative process.
During the visit, the cohort met with State Representatives Dale Wright and Becky Laubinger, who shared a firsthand perspective on serving in the Missouri House of Representatives. The legislators discussed what it takes to campaign for and hold public office, including the leadership traits necessary to represent constituents and navigate the legislative process.
Participants engaged in a candid conversation about the realities of serving at the state level. Representatives Wright and Laubinger spoke about what campaigning for office is like, the pace and demands of the legislative schedule, and what a typical day at the Capitol entails during session. They also reflected on the most rewarding aspects of their work, as well as some of the unexpected challenges that come with public service.
The cohort also received a presentation about the Missouri Chamber of Commerce Political Institute, toured the Capital building and Governor’s Mansion, and received a leadership lesson on “Building Consensus”.
The discussion also focused on how future leaders can prepare for roles in government. Topics included the types of knowledge and experience that are helpful for legislators, as well as the key policy issues that aspiring public servants should be paying attention to if they are interested in running for office.
Lead Local is designed to give participants a comprehensive understanding of the systems that support a thriving community. Throughout the program, participants explore key sectors that shape the region, including city, county, and state government; workforce and economic development; education; health and social services; emergency management; and preparation for serving on a board of directors. The program aims to equip participants with the knowledge, relationships, and confidence needed to step into leadership roles across the community.
The current cohort will graduate in May and includes Ashley Bischoff, Carson Loughary, Corben Crites, Christina Hample, Jase Odle, Logan Bryson, Tadao Gibson, Tiffany LaChance, Whittney Shumway, and Zach Myers.
